Embracing Neurodiversity: Creating Inclusive, Accessible School Libraries for All Minds
Presented by Dr. Abigail Phillips from UW-Milwaukee
The terms neurodiversity, neurodiverse, and neurodivergent are growing in use within schools, libraries, and community support services. There is a clear desire by librarians, educators, parents, and youth themselves to learn more. In this presentation, Dr. Abigail Phillips will provide a brief overview of neurodiversity, highlight practitioner geared research, share experiences from librarians engaged with neurodiverse students, and suggest ways to train staff to better serve neurodivergent students, and illustrate the need for inclusive and representative neurodiverse collections, programming, and library spaces.
The presenter would like to acknowledge that she is disabled and neurodivergent. Her scholarship, writing, teaching, and self-advocacy are reflective of, and informed by, being an engaged member of these communities.
